Can one REALLY learn to be a dog groomer online? I see there are courses online but wonder of the validity of them. I live in rural BC and am interested in taking the course and setting up my own shop. Any input – thanks!
Speaking as a groomer of 20 years.
I wouldn’t bother with an online course. This is really a hands-on business, you need someone to watch and who can watch you.
Even if you go to a grooming school, even though they tell you that you can open your own shop when you finish, don’t beleive them. There is SO much more to learn. EVERY person that we have hired who graduated from a school needed LOTS more training (and some un-training).
The main benefit to attending a grooming school is that potential employers are more likely to treat you seriously, since you’ve invested the time and money in learning and are still interested in grooming.
You other alternative is to go around to the GOOD shops in the area and see if they will train you in exchange for work.
There’s a lot more to it than just cutting hair. You need to be able to handle difficult dogs, you need to know health issues, skin problems, parasite control, basic first aid, dog behavior, training, safety, shop and equipment maintenance, how to run a business etc.

I’m a dog groomer, and am just curious how people at home groom their own dogs. Do you have your own set up area? Or dog you sit on the floor to do it? Enjoy doing it or dread it?
How much did you spend on your equipment?
Was it hard to learn how, I just want to hear about your experiences.
My dog is 3 1/2 and has never even had a bath….He is a rhodesian ridgebak x..believe it or not he is very clean and even smells nice..he really doesn’t have a dog smell at all except when he’s wet..He even sleeps with us and trust me I would NOT sleep with dog smell!….I guess some breeds can take care of their own grooming?!…We trim his nails of course!
I have two Labs, and I groom them myself. I just had my 3rd set of clippers break on me, within 3 months! I looking for the BEST dog clippers that you can recommend. Thanks in advance!
I use a pet Dremel, works great and not as likely to injure the vein.
I really need to get my dog groomed. The problems: she’s 13 yrs. old, never been groomed before, and I really don’t know how she would do with a stranger if I’m not there. So what I’m trying to find is a place in Wichita, KS where I can take her and maybe stay with her or a groomer that can come to my house and do it. If anyone knows of any places like this please let me know.
Check your yellow pages for mobile groomers. Tell them your concerns before the appointment.
With a dog that age, that is not used to being groomed it might be better to take her to the groomer at a vets office.
Charlie loves to love.

I know of one that has a pretty good reputation. The Pennsylvania Academy Of Pet Grooming in Indiana, PA. It is run by the ClipperVac people. Their website is http://clippervac.com/school/index.htm
You can try looking at petgroomer.com for other suggestions if that doesn’t help.
The school in Indianna, PA has a very full curriculim taught by Certified Master Groomers and will teach you more than just the clipper-vac techniques. If you learn how to use all the tools available to you correctly the first time, you will do very well. I learned on one from the beginning as an apprentice to a Master Groomer and never got confused.
As to the clipper-vac issue. Although it is a debated point in the grooming world, it can be a wonderful tool to a skilled groomer when used correctly. It can really help to get a smooth clean clip on difficult areas like pads, sanitary, and to shave poodle faces and feet. It is not necessarily a "flo-be" to be used on the whole dog. I happen to do a fair amount of more traditional hand scissoring, clippering and hand stripping but use the clipper-vac when called for. It was ungainly at first, but once I got used to it it was wonderful. Of course, there are a lot of fly by night, untrained "groomers" out there who will perhaps use it incorrectly and give it a bad name but that doesn’t mean it is a bad tool. Most of the arguments I have heard against it were that it was awkward to get used to and too much of a hassle.
